About

I. What is CCC?

The Canadian Chemistry Competition (CCC) and the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (CCO) are jointly organized. The CCC fosters an understanding of chemistry among talented young people, encouraging them to pursue it as a career and promoting excellence in chemistry at the high school/Cégep level nationwide. Each year, over 600 students take the CCO exam alongside these students. The CCC targets the top 10% of Canadian high school and CEGEP students under the age of 20 studying chemistry. The CCO targets the top 5% of these students.

The Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (CCO) is seeking volunteer graduate chemistry students as guest lecturers to help high school chemistry students solve Olympiad-level chemistry problems at the Canadian Olympiad Training Camp in May, June, and July 2024. The 2020 International Chemistry Olympiad provided an excellent example of the types of problems the CCO hopes graduate students will demonstrate and explain to students. We would love to hear from students interested in all areas of chemistry.

II. About CIC

CCO is organized by the Chemical Society of Canada (CIC), a renowned academic organization comprised of three chemical societies: the Chemical Society of Canada, the Society of Chemical Engineers of Canada, and the Society of Biochemistry of Canada.

III. History of CCO

The International Chemistry Olympiad (OIC) is held annually, with participation from 100 countries. It encourages excellence not only in the secondary school chemistry community but also in chemistry students worldwide. L'IChO is the most prestigious international chemistry competition for Canadian students, held in the second or third edition of the CÉGEP.

Canada participated in the 1985 International Chemistry Olympiad. Canadian students won 8 gold medals, 31 silver medals, and 61 bronze medals, with 8 receiving honorable mentions. Here is a complete list of Canadian students from that period. In 1997, the International Physical and Chemical Olympiads were held in Sudbury and Montreal, Canada. This was the first event organized by IChO and IPhO, aiming to bring joy to our friends.

IV. About ICHO

The International Chemistry and Physics Olympiads began in 1967 with only three Eastern European countries participating. The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is held annually, with participation from up to 100 countries. Its goal is to encourage excellence in high school chemistry education and learning worldwide. The IChO is the most prestigious global chemistry competition that Canadian students can participate in at the high school or CÉGEP level.

Canada first participated in the International Chemistry Olympiad in 1985. Since then, Canadian chemistry students have won a total of 8 gold medals, 34 silver medals, and 61 bronze medals, as well as 8 honorable mentions. Below is a complete list of past Canadian students. In 1997, the International Physics and Chemistry Olympiads were held in Sudbury and Montreal, Canada. This was the first time that the IChO and IPhO were hosted by the same country in the same year.
